This year's Latino Summit will be back in-person and after two years of a global pandemic, and countless other challenges, we are kicking the summit off right! 

This year's keynote speaker will be award-winning author Pascuala Herrera. Herrera brings a unique perspective to the Latino empowerment conversation. Her story will surely serve to inspire the next generation.

​Este año el Latino Summit volverá en persona y después de dos años de una pandemia mundial y muchos otros desafíos. ¡Estamos iniciando nuestro evento de la mejor manera!

La oradora principal de este año será la galardonada autora Pascuala Herrera. Herrera aporta una perspectiva única a la conversación sobre el empoderamiento Latino. Su historia seguramente servirá para inspirar a la próxima generación.

El siguiente es un breve extracto de su sitio web.
​​​Pascuala Herrera, a Mexican immigrant woman with a physical disability resulting from childhood polio, had the odds against her, yet she conquered simply by working hard, having unfailing faith, and finding her own life purpose.  Although her mother always told her that “life was a valley of tears,” Pascuala learned that although there were many difficult moments in her life, there were also beautiful miracles that happened every day.

Pascuala Herrera tells her life’s narrative with honest painful stories, simple yet joyous triumphs, and humor that will lead all readers to embrace their own struggles and realize that life is “Not Always a Valley of Tears.”   From being a child crawling in the streets of her pueblo in Mexico to becoming a successful educator in the United States, she proved that everything is possible.  This autobiography covers many facets of the human experience– race, health, disability, religion, poverty, immigration, access to medical care, education, disability rights, miscarriage, adoption, and much more.

Pascuala Herrera, una mujer inmigrante mexicana con una discapacidad física resultante de la poliomielitis infantil, tenía todas las probabilidades en su contra, pero logró lo que muchos no pueden simplemente trabajando mucho, teniendo una fe inquebrantable y encontrando su propio propósito de vida. Aunque su madre siempre le decía que “la vida era un valle de lágrimas”, Pascuala aprendió que, aunque hubo muchos momentos difíciles en su vida, también hubo hermosos milagros que sucedían todos los días.

Pascuala Herrera cuenta su vida con historias honestas y dolorosas, triunfos simples pero alegres y con humor que llevará a todos los lectores a aceptar sus propias dificultades y darse cuenta de que la vida "No siempre es un valle de lágrimas". De ser una niña gateando por las calles de su pueblo en México a convertirse en una educadora exitosa en los Estados Unidos, demostró que todo es posible. Latinx professional and student panelists from across the Chicagoland area will meet at Harper College to inspire and mentor the next generation of Latinx leaders. On November 17, 2017 we celebrated another successful Latino Summit. We had panelists from across the Chicagoland area. Our opening ceremonies featured a keynote from Illinios lieutenant governor, Evelyn Sanguinetti, Traditional Folkloric performances from The Maine East Latino Club from Maine East High School and The Latin American New Roots Dance Club From Barrington High School.

We are creating a video documentary of past Latino Summit participants.  We would love for you to participate by recording a short two to three minute video. We have crated a list of guidelines and questions to help you create an impactful and inspirational video about your experience. 
What should you include in the video?
Here are a list of questions we need you to answer in the video:
  1. ​What high school did you go to?
  2. Where are you going to school/graduate from?
  3. What are you/did you major in?
  4. What is your career?  Where are you working now?
  5. What was the most inspirational moment for you at Latino Summit?

Your inspirational input.
Here is a list of questions you can answer in your video as well. Use one of these to help you shape your message.
  1. How have you grown since your freshman year in high school?
  2. If you could say 1 thing to your 9th grade self, what would it be?
  3. What accomplishment are you most proud of?
  4. What piece of advice would you give these high school freshmen?
  5. What was the biggest obstacle you had/have to overcome? How did you overcome it?
  6. How has your Hispanic/Latino background helped you succeed?
  7. What one single word would you give to offer hope to these freshmen/students?

Things to keep in mind.
You are exactly what Latino Summit is all about! Here are some guidelines that will keep our message consistent.
  1. Wear business casual attire 
  2. Select an appropriate backdrop.  Neutral backdrop to keep the audience’s attention.
  3. Be natural and 'yourself'. Give an honest impression of how you are and about your path- post high school.
  4. Be mindful to use appropriate language.  Your audience is mostly comprised of 9th grade students AND School Staff!
  5. Remember your high school audience.  They are young and impressionable.  Be honest and positive with your message.  
  6. Don't worry about perfection!  We will be editing every video.

In late March 2016 Stanford announced that ​accepted students whose families make less than $125,000 a year won’t have to pay anything for tuition. Stanford's student tuition normally runs nearly $46,000 a year.

“Our highest priority is that Stanford remain affordable and accessible to the most talented students, regardless of their financial circumstances,” said Provost John Etchemendy in a press release. “Our generous financial aid program accomplishes that, and these enhancements will help even more families, including those in the middle class, afford Stanford without going into debt.” The school says that 77 percent of undergraduates leave without student debt.

Lorenzo Santillan es uno de los miembros del equipo que construyó un vehículo submarino operado por control remoto (ROV, por sus siglas en ingles) para poder participar en el Campeonato de Centros de Tecnología ROV en Santa Barbara, CA en el 2004. Varios estudiantes y familias del Distrito 214 pudieron ver Lorenzo dar una presentación el pasado, 6 de abril en el Forest View Educational Center.
